Personality:
As Queen of the Fairytale realm, Regina has a powerful hold on those who serve her. Domineering and ruthless, she rules over the land with an iron grip and has little affection for her subjects. Regina plays up to the wrath she’s infamous for and she enjoys the power she has, for with such fear at her disposal, she doesn’t always need a heart to control others. For as well as being manipulative and cunning, Regina is intelligent, and she knows how to use her reputation to suit her means. Being as feared as she is, little question her and she usually gets what she wants, but should anyone ever stand in her way, she’s quick to demonstrate why she should never be questioned.

Therefore, it’s not difficult to see why such cold, calculating behaviour has earnt her the name ‘Evil Queen.’ But Regina has never been purely evil; in fact, she was once pure of heart, and her descent into darkness was simply a result of heartbreak. Before her marriage to the King, her mother murdered her one true love, plummeting Regina into lifelong grief and casting her world into darkness.

It was this tragedy that tainted a once fair and kind girl, seeping through her like a disease and darkening the good heart she had one had. She became obsessed by her desire for revenge, for she blamed Snow White for her fiancé’s death. Since marrying the King, she has been determined make Snow’s life as wretched as possible, to ensure she’ll never see the happiness she was denied. This hatred has shaped the rest of her life, giving her motivation when she thought she had lost it all. Everything is now a desperate means to fill the hole that has been left by fiancé’s brutal murder.

But even since then, Regina has never quite shaken free of her mother’s grip. As a child, Regina had been constantly criticised, and felt like she could do nothing to make her mother happy. She spent so long trying to satisfy her, but in the end, she was shown the true extent of her mother’s evil. This brutality and sheer determination, as well as her obsessive need for control are all traits possessed by Cora.

Perhaps this is why Regina tries so hard to obtain power, believing she is becoming to be the woman she wants to be. She fights against any attempt to control her, and she exerts her authority in anyway she can, to the point of murder. The idea of anybody getting past her armour terrifies her, so she does all she can to build up an unbreakable wall, refusing to let others in, and the true Regina out. If she ever let her act slip, if only for a second, she feels she would lose the power she has over others, and the last thing she wants is for others to pity her. Regina is extremely proud, and when she carries herself, it’s not just as a Queen, but it’s as a strong and confident woman. She believes in her own abilities, in her power, to the point of being derisive and ignorant of those ‘beneath’ her.

And so she hides herself behind a cold mask, protecting herself from the danger of emotion, with nothing able to convince her to give up this tirade of malevolence. Weakness is something Regina fears, for even when she was once sentenced to death, she refused to show regret for her crimes, throwing away a chance of mercy, to instead use that moment to show no repentance for all the terrible things she had done. Because she would rather die a fighter, than live a failure.

These hardships have turned Regina selfish, but tragically so, for after losing so much, she feels she must prioritise her own happiness, at the cost of everyone else’s. If everyone else is suffering, she can trick herself into thinking she’s better off. This hatred has consumed her so completely, that if she didn’t feel this, she’d feel nothing at all – something that scares her far more.

But all this comes at a price, for while Regina would never admit it, she is desperately lonely. She’s tricked herself into thinking she doesn’t need friends or allies, only those who do her bidding. Since Daniel’s death, Regina has never been able to love another, and any relationships she has had were either a form of manipulation or simply used to satisfy her sexual needs. Even the woman she called her best friend fell foul to her wrath, for when Maleficent became an obstruction in her quest to destroy Snow White, Regina fought her and won.

There was only one person left in the land who Regina truly loved, but even her father, compliant and desperately protective of his daughter, was sacrificed for her happiness. It was his heart, his love, that gave Regina the power to enact the Dark Curse – her final stand against the girl who ruined her life.

But would this satisfy her? For too long Regina has been tainted by her bitter grief, with every decision echoing back to that fateful day in the stables. Tragic and desperate, she has driven herself down a path she can never retreat from, believing Snow’s death is the only thing that will restore her.

But in truth, Regina’s fairytale is one that will never see a happy ever after.
Powers/Abilties:
Regina’s greatest power is by far her magic. These dark powers enable her to do a great deal of damage to those who cross her. Such abilities include, the ability to travel great distances, to manipulate the elements, to conjure items out of thin air, to transform one object into another and to even tear out the still-beating heart of a victim. She also has alchemy skills, and is renowned for her ability to create poisoned apples. Also, with the help of spell books and magical inscriptions, she can also enact powerful curses, such as the Dark Curse.

[She has it. The inscription of the Dark Curse was hers once more. Now Regina knew exactly what she needed to do to enact the power. And now, she is arranging the first of those ingredients through the magic of her Mirror. All those dark souls she knew would hear, and would come scurrying for their share of the prize.]

If you thought you were hiding … you’re wrong.

[A glimmer of a dark smile catches her lips, a look that would send fear through those who received this message.]

I’ve always known where you are, and I also know it’s time for you to pick a side.

Meet me at midnight, in the middle of the Thorned Forest, and you’ll find out how I intend to secure victory.

I expect to see each and every one of you. And if I don’t …

[There is a telling snarl to her tone, an unspoken promise to the fate that might befall them.]

We’ll most certainly meet again.

[Her hand waves and the mirror clouds over, her message gone to the depths of the enchanted realm. Now it is time for her next ingredient.]

Father!

[She turns, and for just a moment, there’s the faintest glimmer of regret in her eyes.]

Bring me Rocinante.

Beyond the doors of the great hall, Regina could hear the sounds of the congregation. The voice of the priest rang above all else, reciting the vows that would grant Snow White and her precious Charming the happy ever after they’d always wanted.

Regina was moments from bursting inside and disrupting the disgustingly hopeful ceremony, but she gave herself a moment alone, composing herself in the corridor she had long since rid of guards. Turning her back on the doors, she reached into her gown, pulling free the most precious item she owned. Between her fingers she held a brass ring, which glowed delicately in the candlelight. Though it had once been nothing more than a simple saddle fastening, this ring was now a symbol of the love she had lost and could never replace. A wedding they would never have.

Tilting the ring, the light caught it just so, revealing the face of her lover she had magically woven into the enchanted ring. The sight of it both lifted and broke her heart. Before her lips dare breathe a sob, she slipped the engagement ring out of sight once more, taking a deep breath to calm any emotion that might betray this moment.

Then, slowly, her lips curled into a snarl, a darkness manifesting in the pits of her eyes. Turning her head, she looked down the long walkway to the doors that separated her from the only destiny she had left. The demise of Snow White. The rotten princess who had destroyed her only hope of a happy ever after.

With a forceful swish of her dress, she strode down the corridor, raising both hands to summon the magic that would blast open those doors and interrupt Snow White’s pathetic little ceremony.

Today was meant to be the happiest day of their life.

Now, it was going to be hers.
